About the artist

A lifelong Londoner with a deep connection to the ever-evolving rhythm of the city, Nigel Ryan is a photographic artist whose work is rooted in layered abstraction, atmosphere, and movement. He has had a camera in hand for as long as he can remember, but in 2017 made a conscious decision to study, refine his skills, and find his voice as an artist — a process that has shaped the distinctive visual language he uses today.

Often blending as many as 40 or 50 exposures into a single piece, Nigel “paints” with his camera, constructing textured, multifaceted images that gradually reveal themselves over time. Each viewing offers the chance for fresh discoveries, as hidden details and subtle emotional cues emerge from the layers. Working with techniques such as multiple exposure, intentional camera movement, and long exposure, he distils both the energy and stillness of a place, often drawing on his own sense of curiosity, contemplation, and connection.

With an extensive career in IT consultancy and development, Nigel brings analytical precision to his practice, balancing technical mastery with an intuitive, painterly approach to light and form. His work is inspired by both urban and natural environments, capturing the extraordinary in the everyday and reimagining familiar locations through experimental techniques.

His photography is as much about presence as it is about perspective, inviting viewers to step closer, look longer, and uncover their own narratives within the shifting layers of each piece.

Nigel is a member of Axis, the Visual Artists Association, and the Association of Photographers. His work has been exhibited widely, including at The Other Art Fair, Flux, New Artists Fair, and Boomer Gallery, as well as in curated international exhibitions. In 2020, he received three Honourable Mentions from the International Photography Awards, each recognised with a Certificate of Accomplishment, and was featured in the AOP Black and Minority Ethnic Member Spotlight Focus with his photographs …And The Trees Fell and The Lone Tree.

Nigel is a confident public-speaker and has been a guest speaker at the Northfields Camera Club, presenting his work in 2023 and again in 2025.
